Sexuality is a key part of human nature. People with cognitive disability (including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder) experience the same range of sexual thoughts, attitudes, feelings, desires, fantasies and activities as anyone else. To understand and enjoy sexuality, everyone needs appropriate information and support from as early as possible.

This education session is designed for professionals who support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and want to develop skills on the topics related to reproductive and sexual health and relationships.

Learning Intentions

Participants will:

  • explore the emergence of sexuality in someone with ASD and factors that may affect this
  • identify supporting legislation in relation to sexuality and ASD
  • explore why talking about sexuality with individuals with ASD is important
  • develop strategies to support the sexuality of individuals with ASD
  • examine how ASD might impact:
    • relationships
    • sexual and gender diversity
    • pornography
    • public and private
    • consent
  • explore how to answer questions and respond to behaviour
  • have an opportunity to network with other professionals
  • have an opportunity to ask questions of an experienced disability and community educator

Workshop details

  • FPV workshops are delivered by experienced disability and community educators.
  • In-person sessions run for 3 hours.
  • You have access to the self-paced module for six (6) months.

Location

Offered as a fully online self-paced module, in-person sessions at one of our clinic locations or eLearning sessions via Zoom. This can also be conducted as an outreach session at your service for a group fee.
