Most people with an STI won’t show any symptoms. Meaning they can pass it on without realising. The good news? Most STIs clear up quickly with the right treatment.

Where else can I get checked?

You can visit:

  • Your local GP
  • Sexual health clinics
  • Family planning clinics
  • Community health centres
  • Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations

Find a service near you using the National Health Services Directory. Here you can filter by location, cost and more.

What happens at your appointment?

It’s normal to feel a bit unsure about STI testing. SHV are here to make it simple, quick and private.

Your nurse or doctor might ask you about:

  • Your sexual activity
  • When you last had sex
  • What kind of protection you use or didn’t use (e.g. condoms, dams)
  • The genitals your partners have (this helps tailor the right tests for you)

Depending on your sexual activity, testing may include:

  • A urine sample
  • A blood test
  • A genital, anal or oral swab (most times you can do this yourself)
  • A physical exam (if you have symptoms)

Cost

Fees vary depending on which clinic you visit. If you have a Medicare card, some appointments may be bulk billed. If not, there may be a gap fee or full fee. You can call us for free on 1800 013 952 to discuss your options.

Don’t wait for symptoms. If you’re sexually active, regular STI testing is the best way to protect your sexual health and your partners’.
